AAFS and Community, Participate in 13th Annual Arab American Service Day

Arab American Family Services participated in it’s 13th annual Arab American Service Day

Arab American Family Services participated in it’s 13th annual Arab American Service
Day on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Over the years, AAFS has been involved in a number of projects, such as cleaning up the beach and making meal kits for the needy.  This year, we decided to take our services to a family shelter. For those of you who may not know, a family shelter is a place of temporary protection and support for survivors escaping domestic violence and abuse in all forms.

This year, we partnered up with Family Shelter Services a non-profit in Wheaton, IL.  AAFS volunteers spent their beautiful Saturday morning gardening, deep cleaning the children’s playroom, sanitizing toys, cleaning windows and cleaning and organizing the kitchen amongst, other areas of the facility.  It was during this experience that AAFS volunteers learned that survivors stay on site for an average of 45 days before being able to safely transition to a new home. Participants mentioned that “it was very eye-opening to us to know the number of people that go through this building”. Close to 400 families have gone through FSS each year. We are grateful to give back and thankful to have participated in another year with Arab American Service Day.
