AAFS educates and inspires at “Amplify Your Voice” summit

Arab American Family Services (AAFS) co-founders Itedal Shalabi and Nareman Taha joined leaders from local organizations on August 18 for “Amplify Your Voice: A One Day Toolbox” to help empower local activists and organizations with their stories, expertise, and service offerings.

The event was held at Chicago Theological Seminary and among the dynamic organizations that participated were Pillars, MUHSEN, and Unity Productions Foundation (UPF). AAFS was represented with Itedal Shalabi speaking during the opening plenary and Nareman Taha and Ahmed Karrar co-facilitating informative and educational fundraising and non-profit workshops.

During the opening plenary, Itedal summed up the importance of the summit:

“Being able to create our own community and show our younger generations the possibilities for our community [is important]. We need to take our own space, and we need to make space. I always say if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu. We need to speak for ourselves, by ourselves. If you want something, you can’t wait for someone else to do it. You need to do it. We want our younger generation to know that we have a place for them here.”

AAFS extends sincere thanks and appreciation to Dilnaz Waraich who had the vision of bringing together community organizations to tell their story and highlight their work. AAFS is grateful to have had the opportunity to connect, learn from each other, share ideas, and above all, be inspired by the great work being accomplished by our community organizations.
