Community members receive help with U.S. citizen application and interviews

Community members received free help with their citizenship applications and interviews on August 22 as Rima Najia, Citizenship & Immigration Coordinator, led a workshop at Arab American Family Services (AAFS) for a dozen attendees.

The U.S. Citizenship Application & Interview Workshop was for the Legal Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) who are applying or thinking of applying for their citizenship application and want to understand the application.

For the citizenship application, Rima addressed each question on the form carefully, and made sure all the attendees understood each question while also explaining it to them in Arabic. She reminded the participants that at the time of the citizenship interview, while it is important to memorize the answers, it is just as important that they understand the questions being asked and are able to explain their answers thoughtfully.

The engaging workshop, also offered Rima the opportunity to test the participants by conducting mock interviews for them to prepare them for what to expect during their interview. In addition, Rima educated the group about their rights and responsibilities at the time of the interview, what documents are needed at the time of the interview, as well as how to address the officers, and what to do if there any issues that arise during the interview process.
